WBV: Target Your Training with Different Frequencies

Different tissues in the body respond to different frequencies of whole body vibration (WBV) training, just as they respond differently to varying durations and styles of WBV machines.

WBV and frequency

When it comes to WBV, frequency is a measurement of how many times the WBV platform raises and lowers each second. For example, a frequency of 30Hz means that the machine’s platform goes up and down 30 times every second—that’s a lot of stimulation.

At first glance, this may not seem very important. But frequency determines how much of a workout your muscles are getting—a difference of 10Hz can really change how WBV affects your body.

The vibrational sweet spot

As with many things in life, more isn’t always better. Most scientists typically agree there’s a sweet spot when it comes to WBV. This is between 20Hz and 45Hz. Although you can still benefit from vibrations as low as 10Hz, this sweet spot provides optimum results.

WBV: Less isn’t always more

In fact, frequencies less than 18Hz have been shown to be great for relaxing muscles, while those above 50Hz can put unnecessary strain on them, as well as cause clotting. A recent study conducted by the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Istanbul University in Turkey examined the effects of two frequencies (30Hz and 50Hz) on knee extensors muscle strength in twenty-two healthy individuals over the course of 24 sessions of WBV training.

The study concluded, “. . .8 weeks WBV training in 30 Hz was more effective than 50 Hz to increase the isometric contraction and dynamic strength of knee extensors as measured using peak concentric torque, and equally effective with 50 Hz in improving eccentric torque of knee extensors in healthy young untrained women.”

Of course the individual has to be taken into consideration too. What works for one person, may not be the best for another. Here at BodyQuirks we strive to meet each person where they are, really listening to their concerns and needs. Then, taking everything into consideration, we determine if WBV is right for them, and precisely which machines, frequencies, and training modules suit their unique needs above all others.
