Healing the Body With Bone Broth

There’s been a lot out there about bone broth, but what is it? Why is it so great?

Louise Hay, one of my favorite motivational speakers and authors, recently published a book on the benefits of bone broth, but it seems like all of our favorite health experts are talking about this amazing superfood! We like to make our own bone broth here at BodyQuirks anyway, and here’s why:

Healthy Joints & Skin:

Collagen makes up organs, tissues, and joints and bone broth is rich in several types of collagen. When our body is making enough or is being supplemented with this super nutrient, our teeth get stronger and whiter, joint tissue can begin to re-grow and be strengthened, and our skin clears up and gets firmer. Collagen can help reduce cellulite and prevent stretch marks. Cellulite is often the result of a lack of collagen in the dermal layer, which serves to “hold the fat in place.”

Reduces Inflammation:

Bone broth contains such amino acids as cystine, histidine, proline, glutamine and glycine, which reduce inflammation. Natural health expect, Dr. Mercola, mentions how Arginine, also found in bone broth has been shown to bebeneficial for the treatment of sepsis (whole-body inflammation)“. L-glutamine specifically reduces gut inflammation by repairing the lining of the intestinal wall. Additionally, chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine are extracted from boiled cartilage and reduce inflammation in joints.

Heals the Gut:

Not only do the amino acids, especially L-glutamine help heal the lining of the intestinal tract, but the “gelatin found in bone broth is a hydrophilic colloid, which attracts and holds liquids, including digestive juices, thereby supporting proper digestion“, according to Dr. Mercola.

Strengthens Bones & Teeth:

Bone-formation requires an adequate supply of the following nutrients: calcium, protein, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin D, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, boron, iron, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, and the B vitamins, all of which are found in bone broth.

Boosts Immune System:

Anything that heals the gut will strengthen the immune system, and anything that lowers inflammation will speed up your body’s own healing process. The amino acids in bone broth have been shown to lower inflammation in the respiratory tract. Additionally, those with auto-immune conditions or food allergies often suffer from leaky gut, which occurs when undigested food particles seep through tiny openings in the weakened intestinal lining and enter the bloodstream. Once food gets into the bloodstream, the immune system detects them and becomes hyperactive. Bone broth helps heal leaky gut and the immune system is able to come back into balance.

The best part is, this amazing super food is easy to make! Just ask your local butcher or grocery store for beef bones and toss them in your crock pot! Check out the video below for a step by step guide to making your own bone broth!
