You may have heard of Craniosacral Therapy or seen it mentioned on our brochures, but what exactly is it?

Craniosacral therapy is a holistic therapy and non-invasive form of bodywork, incredibly effective at aiding your bodies own natural healing abilities. This gentle release of chronic tensions within the body can “effect major changes in both physical and emotional well-being”, according to the Irish Association of Craniosacral Therapists. CranioSacral therapists work with the craniosacral system, which includes the skull, (or cranium), sacrum (lower spine), cerebrospinal fluid and membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord to help improve the function of the central nervous system and the overall body .

What Does CST Do?

CranioSacral therapists evaluate and adjust the functions of the body through gently manipulating the skull bones (the cranium) and the sacrum to relieve pain and a variety of other ailments. This light-touch approach is used to release stored tensions in the central nervous system. When stored tensions release, all the other systems in the body relax and imbalances begin to self-correct. CST complements the body’s natural healing process, helping to shore up the immune system. It is also extremely effective in treating a wide range of health issues, including chronic pain conditions.

This form of therapy was invented by osteopath William G. Sutherland in the 1930s and developed further in the 1970’s by Dr. John Upledger, the leader of CranioSacral therapy today. Like other holistic therapies, CST emphasizes subjective concepts such as energy, harmony, balance, rhythm and flow. CS therapist assist the “inner physician” to regain balance and harmony, the belief is that the body knows what it needs but sometimes requires a little bit of help. Often times clients report feeling deeply relaxed, grounded, and rejuvenated after a session.

Who can benefit from CST?

Everyone can benefit, and is even recommended during pregnancy. CST builds health in the brain and nervous system, so can help prevent chronic conditions, including aging, stiffness, memory loss, inflammation, immune imbalances, as well as address old and recent injuries.

Birth trauma often affects people throughout their life and old injuries, especially head or tailbone injuries. Even recovery from minor surgeries can be supported by CST, including dental work (go to caton ave dentist to avail cheap and best dental services in the locality), which can create strains and anesthesia residues. This approach is helpful in waking the body up to its own intelligence.
