What is Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST)?

Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST), also know as craniopathy and cranial osteopathy, is a holistic therapy that involves the manipulation of the skull bones (the cranium) and the sacrum to relieve pain and a variety of other ailments. This groundbreaking therapy was invented by osteopath William G. Sutherland in the 1930s. Another osteopath, John Upledger, the leading proponent of CranioSacral therapy today, pioneered and helped to further develop the modern practice of this method. Like other holistic therapies, CST emphasizes subjective concepts such as energy, harmony, balance, rhythm and flow.

What Does CST Do?

This gentle, hands-on method allows evaluation and adjustment of the functions of the body through soft pressure manipulation of the craniosacral system, which includes the cerebrospinal fluid and membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

With touch pressure that is no greater than 5 grams, (the weight of a nickel) practitioners release restrictions, helping to improve the function of the central nervous system and as a result the overall body. CST complements the body’s natural healing process, helping to shore up the immune system. It is also extremely effective in treating a wide range of health issues, including chronic pain conditions such as:

  • Migraines
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
  • Chronic muscle, neck and back pain
  • Autism
  • Disorders of the Central Nervous System
  • Orthopedic issues
  • Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Scoliosis
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Stress and Tension
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Colic

CST the Next Level: SER

At BodyQuirks, our Licensed Massage Therapist, Esther Bell specializes in CranioSacral Therapy. In addition to the many other modalities Esther uses, to customize your experience and healing process, she has continued to study CST and recently completed the next level of this amazing modality called SER.  SomatoEmotional Release (SER) works in conjunction with CST and expands on its principles, helping to remove any residue left behind in the mind and body due to trauma.

“I like to use CranioSacral Therapy because it relies on the client’s ‘inner physician’ rather than external factors. I’m there to assist,  if the body wants me but that ‘inner physician’ always knows what the body needs — more than anyone from the outside. CST relies on the therapist getting out of way and just holding the space for changes to occur.  When it’s done right, you’re to be present and  leave the ego out of it — the CST practitioner is not invested in the outcome.

I found CST while looking for other, less aggressive modalities, to help my more fragile clients. I believe the body knows what it needs, it just needs a bit of assistance once in awhile, when something becomes chronic and that’s what I’m here for — to assist you in your self-healing process.”
